  1. Hi girls, how many consults did you get? I've seen Dr Harwood and based on my experience, online reviews, word of mouth referrals and gut feeling I want to book with him. I know I should get a second (or third) opinion but I agree with his recommendation - I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted before my consult. He is so knowledgeable yet friendly. The team seen great and I really want twilight anaesthesia, which he offers. Has anyone else only done one consult and knew that's the surgeon for them? Any feedback on Dr Harwood or recommended surgeons for second opinions would help
  2. Just thought i'd share my experience of Breast Augmentations over the last 7 years… will be a lengthy story if you're up for the read. In December 2007 i got my first BA through Dr Robert Reed and Cosmetic Image Clinic here in Brisbane, QLD. I was about a B cup and got 365cc (13.6cm diameter; 3.4cm projection) standard profile PIP implants. At the time i asked for them to be placed under the muscle as that's what all my friends had and i liked how they looked etc. A couple of years ago all the news came out about the PIP implants and the potential risks which prompted me into going to get an ultrasound to get mine checked and make sure they weren't ruptured… it came back that they were ok so for a while i forgot about them. Then at the start of this year (about a year and a half after my first ultrasound) my partner told me i should go again… just to keep an eye on them… so i did… and it came back that i had a rupture in my left one. AND it was extracapsular and some had made it to the lymph nodes in my arm pit. So the next step from this was getting an MRI to confirm the Ultrasound results… i got that done… and it confirmed exactly what the ultrasound had stated. The original place i got them through had since undergone new ownership and rebranding AND my original surgeon had since retired! They were semi-sympathetic but really offered nothing more than a copy of my files (which i didn't really need because i kept all my original paperwork anyway). Unfortunately with ruptured PIP's no one wants to take responsibility and the guy that owned the company is already bankrupt and in jail for it so not much we can do… Anyway, after getting over all of that i started looking for a new surgeon… i contacted about 5 surgeon's in Brisbane and spoke them all via email and phone etc. But ended up going in to see 2… one was an acquaintance of my partners… be he admitted it would be a complicated surgery and just didn't really seem to care so i just didn't feel at ease with him… the second surgeon i saw was Dr Daniel Fleming. From the beginning him and his team made me feel so much better about the pretty shitty situation i was going through. My initial contact with him was an email… which he personally followed up with a phone call within 6 hours of me sending it. I then booked in for my initial consultation. The thing i have always appreciated about Dr Fleming is that he has been nothing but up front, honest and informative about everything that i would have to go through which made me feel good, even though he admitted it would be a bigger/more complicated job he made me feel like it was going to be ok. My first consultation was pretty much just that… giving me info about what had happened to my PIP implants… along with the rupture on the left side i also had a bit of capsular contraction in my right side!! yay for me!! haha what he recommended for me due to it being a re-do and with current issues and of course what size, type of implant etc if i chose to go with him… so with that i went home and spoke with my partner and considered everything he had said, how i felt about him and his team etc etc… it didn't take me (and my partner) long to decide that we definitely wanted him as my surgeon. So i called back a couple of days later and booked in for another consult and a surgery date. On my second consult we went over EVERYTHING again and made sure i was happy with what we had chosen… i went with 440cc round medium profile brazilian implants (12.9cm diameter; 5.2 cm projection), dual plane. I should say here that the reason we went with dual plane is because in all this i discovered that my implants were never actually placed under the muscle like i had asked for and always thought i had… they had been put over the muscle… therefore making it harder to put them fully under the muscle without the risk of creating a "snoopy effect"… so i either had to go back over the muscle (which at my weight/build Dr Fleming thought may be too "edgy") or dual plane (to hide the edge of the implant)… Dr Fleming was to make that call while i was "under"... So surgery day (end of May 2014) quickly came around… i went to Spring Hill Day Hospital for the surgery… everyone there was lovely!! I met with the anaesthetist and Dr Fleming right before the op and then it was straight to it. I woke up later that expected as the surgery had taken a lot longer than expected… there were problems with my left side and the rupture was a bit more of a mess and extensive than initially thought… so it was about a 2 hr 45 min surgery in the end i think. They had a big job cleaning me up. But that being said it was done… i was heavily drugged but could feel that the left side was a lot more sore than the right. Dr Fleming came and saw me when i was awake and explained everything that had gone on and i would see him the next day… My sister collected me that afternoon and all seemed fine… that night my left side started getting really swelly… luckily i had drains in so it was sucking most of it out but there was significantly more bleeding through that side than the right… which was completely expected due to the clean up and subsequent trauma that that side had to go through… BUT i was a little worried seeing all that blood coming out so i called Dr Fleming that evening and he came out to my sister's place to check up on me personally which i never expected. Because of the complications he wanted to keep a close eye on me, so i went to see him then next day as well… and then the day after again. Until the first drain came out 2 days after surgery. They took the right one out as it was fine… but i had to keep the left one in for a few more days on top of that. It got to the stage where nothing was coming out into the drains anymore so i eventually got that one out… BUT unfortunately even with the drain i had developed a hematoma because of all the trauma and the fact that where the drain sucks from was really far away from where the hematoma bleed was… the largest part of it being about where the rupture was near the top of my arm pit. We decided it wouldn't need a re-op to fix it and that my body would reabsorb and break it down with time. The hematoma is outside the capsule therefore not affecting the implant under it. I still have the hematoma (6 weeks post op) and in that time Dr Fleming has been away and back again and i have had ALOT of appt's and phone calls from his staff CONSTANTLY checking on me and looking after me beyond what i could EVER have imagined!! He even called me from England to make sure i was ok with everything that was going on and told me that if i needed him all i had to do was text him and he'd call me as soon as the hours were suitable. I am cutting a REALLY long story a bit short here as i'm sure you don't need the details of every appt i had haha and i still have a bit of a recovery ahead of me… Dr Fleming got back last week and i went in to see him which was great and this Friday i go in for my 3rd attempt to have the hematoma drained via aspiration (just to fasten the healing process and ease pressure)… the first 2 times were unsuccessful as we have to wait for the body to liquify it a little more before it will come through the syringe… REALLY hope it comes out this time. I guess in all that i really just wanted to tell anyone who was considering Dr Fleming as their surgeon to go with him, he has one of the best reputations in Australia and after everything i've gone through with him and his team i know why. They are so informative, professional and caring. From the office staff, to my nurse at Dr Flemings office, to Dr Fleming himself… all of them have gone above and beyond. I have no doubt that once the hematoma is gone the results are going to be great… i love the size, shape, placement and the scars are pretty much perfect. The support i have gotten from them through all of this has really made this whole ordeal 100% more handle-able. I completely 100% recommend him to everyone!! I guess another thing i wanted to put out there is if you got implants pre 2011 or so… check what you got… if you got PIP ones go and get them checked (via ultrasound) because of their higher than normal rupture rate!! If anyone wanted to ask me anything personal or about my experience as i skipped out a bit of it feel free to PM me or whatever as with all of these things i really have learnt that the more knowledge you have going in to them the better!!
  3. In the interest of re-paying all of the support and advice I received from the gals on this website before my surgery, I am here to return the favour! I am now day 5 post-op and feeling fantastic! I had my op last Wednesday (25.09.13) and I am very happy with my results so far. I cannot recommend my surgeon, Dr Daniel Fleming, enough. My recovery has been really smooth-sailing so far (touch wood!). I have barely any bruising at all (only one tiny bruise on Leftie) and even at it's worse, the pain has only been at about a 2 out of 10. The Spring Hill Day Clinic was really great - the nurses and anaesthetist were really warm and friendly and I wasn't nervous at all going into the OR. Once I was in there, I was asleep within about 5 or 10 minutes and then all I remember is waking up in recovery and having a look at my new boobs Daniel came and checked on me while I was in recovery, which I felt really reassured by. I was able to get dressed myself and after being given something to eat and drink, I was on my way home by 1:30 (op started just after 10am). After-care has also been fantastic - I have had daily phone calls from Dr Fleming's nurses since, just to see how I'm going and give me some tips for sleeping, pain relief, resting up etc. I do have Daniel's mobile number if I wanted to call him at all, but I haven't needed to and my first post-op appointment is Wednesday (one week post-op). I was actually able to drive on day 3, which I know is early but as a single mum, it had to be done! I haven't gone all that far though and I haven't had any ill effects from it. I know everyone recovers at different paces and I feel very blessed to have felt so well thus far. I've also been able to do light housework and after a restless first few nights, I am now used to sleeping on my back and at an angle. I would have to say that the worst parts of the recovery have been the 'no showers for 48 hours' and the bloating. I weighed 65 kgs going into surgery and by the next day, I weighed 68kgs. I know it's fluid rather than fat, but my bloated stomach has honestly felt a whole lot more uncomfortable than my boobs! I've also definitely experienced the 'Morning Boob' phenomenon that other girls have - where my boobs feel more sore, swollen and heavy first thing in the morning. It's getting better each day though and all things considered, I am really feeling so good! In terms of the results themselves, I had pretty marked asymmetry before my surgery and that's much better now. Not perfect, but Daniel was very realistic about that and I am very happy with the improvement. At my consult, we did try different-sized sizers for each side but it didn't really look right so we went with the same sized implants. Rightie is still slightly bigger, but I also think I am holding more fluid in that one at the moment. With implant size and type, I had 305 ultra high profile, shaped, textured Brazilians. 305 cc is nowhere near as big as a lot of girls have, but I am only short and was more interested in restoring my upper breast volume than making them really big. Even considering that they are still a bit swollen and the size will slightly reduce over the next months, I am really happy with them. I hope this post helps. Feel free to comment or message with any questions. I have private pre and post surgery pics so feel free to send a FR if you'd like to see them (and a message with the FR if you wouldn't mind).
  4. So I had a consult with Dr Harwood this week, and unfortunately he can't operate on me as my saggies are saggier than I first thought and I need a BL as well as a BA The good news is that Dr H. definitely lived up to his great reputation and was kind, caring and has referred me onto a PS. He was definitely focussed on getting the best result for me, and that's what I'm after too, so I'm coming to grips with the thought of extra scarring and a longer recovery time. I now have appointments booked with Dr Neil Allen in Ipswich, and Dr Dan Kennedy in the Valley. I'm also considering trying to get into see Dr Fleming as I believe he does lifts as well as BAs. I'm scared of the additional scarring, and the extra cost if I am honest. I would love to hear from other women who've been or are going through the same op. I've also read something about an internal lift. Would love to hear from anyone who's opted for that. Thanks!
