maxillofacial surgeon and genioplasty in Brisbane?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone

For a long time I've been considering some sort of chin augmentation and after a lot of research have decided that Genioplasty is the way to go. However it's soo difficult finding any information about genioplasty in Australia in regards to costs, good surgeons etc...

I know that a maxillofacial surgeon is preferred over a plastic surgeon; so anybody know/recommend a good maxillofacial surgeon in Brisbane that is used to performing this procedure? I would consider interstate as well if I can't find anything locally. Not sure if I want to consider going overseas yet considering the invasiveness of the procedure......

Please help me out if you can as atm I'm just gonna pick random surgeons and see what my gut tells me (not very efficient or economical).

thanks guys

Hi,

How did you go with surgeons. I need to get a BSSO on my lower jaw as well as Genioplasty. I went to a surgeon in Bardon who told me she doesnt do this surgery often and referee me to another surgeon in Spring Hill who seems great however now the first surgeon wants to be involved with my surgery, I guess for experience however is expecting me to pay for her to be my main surgeon and she is going on holidays for the next month and a half and im pretty much ready to have my surgery. Anyway the surgeon I want is a teacher at one of the unis so I would recommend looking at the uni website and google to find where they work from. If they are good enough to teach upcoming surgeons then they must be pretty good :)

She wants you to pay her for being a spectator? Seriously?

Well actually she now wants to be the main surgeon and have the other surgeon supervise her I guess... umm yeah I don't think so... its a pretty stressful situation cause I work a 21 day continuous roster so am only in Brisbane for one week and need my surgery soon as I'm moving to Canada in June and would like to get my surgery and braces off before then. I've had my braces on since May and my ortho said next time I go in he will put the wire on for my surgery so i'm pretty much all set to go except for the miss communication with the surgeons... I think I'm just going to look for a new one. I think she just wants me to pay for her learning experience but she told me she doesn't usually do the procedure so I don't really want to pay for a risk and pay for two surgeons...

Oh I go to Rick Olive in the T&G building for Ortho and he's good. Gets you in and out in no time but also takes time to answer questions. He's made my orthodontics a breeze except i have to book my appointments well in advance due to my work schedule and his popularity. Just do yourself a favor and stay steer clear of the surgeon in Bardon for any major procedures!! I don't know if she wants to learn or is just trying to get extra money out of me...

Oh if anyone has any experience with Dr Maloney in the T&G building I would like to know about your experiences. If you could PM me. I haven't seen him but am looking at going to him for a second opinion especially since he in conveniently located in the same building as my ortho :) As mentioned i'm getting lower jaw surgery so if anyone has had it done with him I would love to speak to you.

Oh also I have a quote for Genioplasty at home but I won't be back there for another week but i'll let you know what my quote is so you know approximately what cost it is.

This is so weird!

But yes I completely agree I would pay her to work on you and be supervised... That is bull.

Obviously doesn't have enough confidence in herself- I would be allowing her to perform surgery!

But like I said we refer to Anthony Lynham he works at the royal and he does nothing but face reconstructions on Mondays- he was in the paper for do I the faces of people who get king hit and assaulted in the valley/city on the weekends...

Check him out for sure

ps where are you moving to Canada? My bro just moved there this month! Haha

Yeah they have given me conflicting information and are only now telling me that she will be my main surgeon right when i'm ready to book in the surgery. I feel like they are trying to pressure me into going with her. I did write to the second surgeon who seems good a letter about it the other day but have not received a response back as yet.

haha what a small world! I've probably seen you before when i've been in.

I'll defiantly try to get an consultation appointment with Dr Lynham next time I'm back in Brisbane.

Well I'm going to be travelling around Canada for at least a year from June. I'll be starting off in Vancouver and just trying to get work and stuff as I go. I just can't wait to get this whole surgery out of the way so I can focus on other stuff.

Hi,

I have sorted out my surgeon and am getting the one I want. Im going for surgery at the end of Feb so will be able to tell you if my surgeon is good after that. The price I have for genioplasty is $1600. The surgeon im going to seems very reasonably priced so maybe a bit more at other places.

Mark tuffley removed my wisdom teeth... He did the Veronica's (singers) as well based in Brisbane city. He is lovely. Not sure if he does the surgery you want but worth a look

Oh if anyone has any experience with Dr Maloney in the T&G building

Wow, as soon as I gave up on this thread people start replying :(

I know this may be too late han89 but I have heard some good things about Dr Moloney as my dentist highly recommends him. I will be considering a consult with him at some point when I'm not so busy.

So who did you end up going with han89? I'm glad you didn't go with the one from Bardon. That situation had warning lights all over it.... I would have no confidence in that surgeon if that happened to me.

So far I have seen two surgeons. One was very thorough with good bedside manner. I have good confidence in him but he does not specialize in oral surgery although he has the training for it. The other guy I saw was quite brash and abrupt and said that if I had to go for a revision surgery I still have to pay his surgeon fee, which I do not agree with - If you stuff it up you should fix it for free!

If anyone would like to know who I saw just PM me.

If anyone has anymore recommendations I would still be interested in what you have to say :)

My apologies for the late reply; I though this thread was dead.......

I'm going to the Portfolio clinc for dental and implant facial surgery in spring hill. Its run by two of the Maxiofacial lecturers from the University of Queensland. I'm going in for my jaw surgery on thursday... starting to get really nervous. I have pretty high faith in my surgeon though. He's very easy to talk to and makes me feel very comfortable, its a very safe enviroment and he welcomes questions and is quite blunt in your facial flaws and isn't afraid to make you laugh. At the end of my last appointment I think he knew i was a bit nervous after answering my questions in his office as I was walking out he was asking are you sure your okay with everything. We discussed genioplasty and he was asking me chin questions which I couldn't really answer so I took in some photos and he discussed with me and pointed to one of my photos which he said he was aiming for that type of profile which I was happy for and relieved that we were on the same page. Although we wont be sure about genioplasty until the surgery he told me all the worst case scenarios and how he would go about dealing with them. He also asked me important questions such as If after the jaw surgery I was very close to the profile i wanted did I still want to go with genioplasty or did I want him to make the call, he also said it could be added on later or he could just do it and if i didn't like it, it could be taken off. I told him I trusted his judgement as a surgeon and to do what he thinks would be best after seeing my jaw.If a surgeon didnt ask questions like this then really you might not end up with what you want and end up with what your surgeon whats.. though in this case I think what I want and my surgeons ideas are pretty much on the same page... anyway I guess i'll be able to tell you more after my surgery. Fingers crossed my surgeon is as good as I think he is.

Hey guys, congrats han89 on finalising your surgeon! He sounds excellent and the price is too. I'm from Sydney and just wondering if yourself, mahk or anyone else had any recommendations for a maxillofacial surgeon in sydney?

I'm new to all this, but I have a very receded jaw/chin and I want to do lower jaw advancement and/or genioplasty and any research tips or knowledge u could share would be awesome.

Good luck!

han89 - Thank you for the detailed reply! Looks like you are in good hands. I wish you the best of luck and if you can, please let us know how it all turns out.

Moonshadow - Unfortunately there's not much info. regarding genioplasty in terms of patient experiences, costs and good surgeons in Aus (none that I could find anyway). So unfortunately you will have to do the investigating yourself for the most part. If you are lucky, someone here or elsewhere may be able to recommend a good NSW surgeon for you. I do not know anything about Sydney surgeons so can't help there sorry. So ask around, ask on forums, yellow pages, google.......

Make sure you always go with surgeons who require a referral (easily obtained from your GP). This way you can get a 100% or part rebate off your consultations. One of the surgeons I saw, I didn't have a referral and paid full price for the consultation. When you ring up to book a consult, ask what you have to bring to the appointment (i.e. x-rays) as this will save you and the surgeon some time and running around.

HTHs..... sorry couldn't be of more help.

Hey

When I was doing research I read good things about Profilo in NSW but personally haven't used them. It sounded good though and I was tempted to do a online consultation just for the opinion but didn't end up.

Thanks mate! Yeah researching Sydney surgeons has been surprisingly difficult. I've got my x-rays but are GP's happy to give referrals for purely cosmetic procedures?

Genioplasty may not always be purely for cosmetic reasons. For example genioplasty can help relieve snoring and sleep apnea by allowing more room for your tongue to lie forward and further away from your throat, potentially opening up the airways to a greater degree and allowing for better breathing; I was told this in one of my consults by the oral surgeon.

Some maxillofacial surgeons require for you to have a referral in order to see them, while others don't really care if you have a referral or not (I've seen both); I would guess that it'll be no different in NSWs. Just say to your GP that you would like to see 'Dr so and so' for genioplasty but that surgeon requires for you to have a referral. Say that you have already spoken to the surgeon or his receptionist staff and they told you to go to your GP to get a referral (that's what happened to me in one case). Since you will need to see a specialist for your procedure your GP will likely write you the referral. My GP had no problems writing me referrals. Also, only GPs who knows you and your history will be more likely to write you a referral. GPs who you've never been to before will less likely write you a referral.
