Trying out Retinol on sensitive skin

So on the advise of the beautiful ladies on this forum I've just applied my very first pea size amount of retinol :D

I purchased the Skinstitut 0.025% retinol; which smells surprisingly good, from www.skincarestore.com.au because they always have 40% off (use code SS40) and I also got the multi active mist because it sounded cool and I wanted free postage haha. With my purchase I also got a sample of the ASAP soothing gel.

My skin is very sensitive, acne prone and somewhat dry but then can also be slightly oily on my forehead sometimes so I am not sure how my skin will cope with the retinol but I will keep you updated for anyone else who has sensitive skin and is wondering what will happen. I'm hoping the soothing gel may help calm my skin after applying the retinol and stop it from drying out as it is described as an "anti-inflammatory" moisturiser and the active mist will add a little more hydration when needed.

I'm hoping to wake up in the morning with amazing clear skin with nothing but my freckles left on it but I think I might be kidding myself! A lot of you have said that you went through a period of redness/peeling so knowing my skin, it will probably just burn off but from the amazing results I've read, I'm willing to risk it.

I will update in the morning as to how my skin has reacted and hopefully it's good news :D

I have started using this cream too at 0.025% of retinol. I followed the instructions - twice a week the first week; every second night in the second week and then every night from then on. I put sunscreen on anyway under my makeup but I am being super religious about it since using the cream. My skin felt a little tingly but has been fine. I have been using it for 2 weeks.

my face is alive!!! no crazy redness/dry patches as of yet and my skin still feels hydrated compared to normal.

would love to know if you've seen any change yet pink butterfly. Also have you applied it on a day where you have also ex foliated your skin because i tend to find if i put anything on my skin other than moisturiser afterwards it does burn.

Dee Envy and Cassie977, I really expected my skin to get irritated with the first application but I think because I took things slowly, all I felt was a slight irritation and only slight peeling of skin around my nose area. I have a strict routine with toning, moisturising, cleansing etc along with always putting sunscreen on - I have very fair skin. But one thing I have noticed is that I am not getting as many blackheads as per usual - yes, even at 40 I get blackheads!! And I normally get those lovely hormonal big pimples either under my chin or on my neck. I am nearly due for my next period and at this stage, I haven't got one yet. I do feel my skin is clearer. I live in Brisbane so we have just gone from having hot, humid weather to cooler weather and much less humidity plus some windy days. Normally my skin would be getting quite dry but I have noticed it is keeping the moisture in. I have only been using the cream for 2 weeks but I will definitely keep using it. :)

I have noticed it has evened out my skin tone and my lines seem less obvious but my skin has been breaking out which is not usual for me. I don't know if it is a coincidence or not but it's driving me mad! I am thinking about stopping it to see what happens. I must admit l didn't do the few times a week rule because my skin was tolerating it fine and it has not been sensitive, so l have used it every day. Bloody pimples!

That's unusual gabby as it usually prevents breakouts as it keeps the oil production down, in fact a lot of people get a bit dry on the product. Definitely stop to see if it's the trigger but it's prescribed for people with acne as it's great for problem skin. What a bummer!!

Yea, l thought it was bit weird! Thats the only thing l can think of though. I have only used my PMD twice since l got it so it can't be that. I really want to stick with it but l hate pimples!

Hi Guy's... been using 0.25 for a week and loving it, my skin is looking more luminous and even toned.

Gabby it's quite common for skin to react that way when trying something new... leave it for a few days and try again. Persevere and I'm sure you're your skin will adapt xx

Hi Minx! How are you?! I am giving it a rest for a few days and then l will go back to it. It is drying my skin out bit but l am also getting pimples- go figure! Glad it is working for you! x

Hey Gabby... doing well thanks, you?

My skin is drying out too (flaking) and making way for new smooth skin. To help with this I'm using a rich skin balm through the day covered with 50+ sunscreen, which helps. the first week I did alternate nights and from then on nightly.

Thinking about going to Laser Clinic and having their special 'Collagen Boost' skin package of 4x Fractional RF treatments, heard some good reviews... must ask Don about it and which clinic she recommends I go to to have it done  :).

Sounds good Minx! Well l have stopped using it and my skin has settled back to normal so l think that must of been the trigger. I am going to start using it again but this time very slowly. It did seem to do great things for my skin apart from the pimples!

Girls what sunscreen would you recommend?? I find that all the ones ive tried clog up my pores and i hate the way it looks and feels. Any suggestions?

Hey Dee... I'm using the one that was given to me when I had my fillers & dysport done in Sydney. It's called Actinica and I'm really loving it! Knowing that many surgeons advocate it is good enough for me  :). Having said that I've heard really good things about Skinstitute sunscreen. They are both priced around $38 - $45 depending on where you purchase them from. If anyone finds them cheaper please let us know  ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Skinstitut is 0.25 % but please only a pea size amount. The downfall of this packaging is it has no dispensing pump and it comes out FAST. retinol travels in the skin so too much and even though you stay away from eyes it will travel and you'll burn your orbits.

How do I know this? Because it's happened to me lol. There are much better brands that control pump their product but this is ok to start on.
