violett
I'm 10 days PO, have had 295CC so not big, but this morning I noticed a stretch mark on the side boob. Not in itself a big deal and not unexpected since I was starting from flat and the skin was stretched very tight, but am hesitant to put any creams on yet while my incision is still healing. I have been instructed to start with the creams on scars in about 2 weeks when tape comes off, but do you think I can put anything on in the mean time to prevent further stretch marks? Can I even prevent further stretch marks? Or if its gonna happen its gonna happen...
LaurenT
I can't help you with advice, but I'll be following this thread for advice. Also interested if any girls used anything prior to surgery to prepare the skin/prevent stretch marks?

Jaddles
Stretchmarks come down to genetics, not lotions. They occur in the supporting structures of your skin, so you can't prevent them by applying anything, because the oil or whatever is only on the surface of your skin. You can get laser on them to take out the redness, but nothing fixes them completely. Newster, Serena90 and Gabby1
tegs033
I have to agree with jaddles... when I was pregnant I used bio oil and a string of other creams/lotions twice a day + and still ended up with horrible stretch marks... they have faded now but the hundreds I spent on creams helped with dryness and that stretching feeling but didnt help to prevent marks.. violett
Thanks ladies, yeah I suspected as much. Hopefully it will just be the one little stretch mark. Even if a few more pop up I can deal with that, small price to pay! I haven't really heard of too many people getting a lot of stretch marks though, and my surgeon said its never really an issue... tegs033
zoesmith
I used baby oil when I was pregnant, with all 4 children, I don't have any stretch marks, anywhere,
mummytotwo
No amount of topical creams will prevent or get rid of stretch marks. They are caused by stretching of the dermis. Topical creams are applied to the epidermis (skin we see) which is approx 30 rows thick. There is no way a topically applied cream can penetrate that far. How do i know? Ive studied cosmetic chemistry and skin biology. Serena90, LaurenT and tannedbae
Newster
My grandmother carried triplets. She used no lotions or oils (it was the 1940s after all). She had no stretch marks. You can slap on all the placebo lotions you like, but ultimately it all comes down to genes.
mycosmeticjourney
Although I don't think creams/oils will prevent stretch marks I believe they can help the appearance of them. I know a girl who got pretty extensive stretch marks over her 450cc boobs and she used palmers coco butter cream and it's helped incredibly. They are barely visible now it's only been a few months
ab1990
I got stretch marks on one side. They seemed to have just popped up 6 weeks post op and I used creams etc pre op. I've never had them before from weight gain etc so guess it's just luck of the draw.
lost2001
First off you can apply cream/oils to any where around your boob - just dont mess with the incision. You're allowed to have a shower at this stage and although its good to be cautious there is nothing wrong with it (my ps recommended it actually). And secondly when it comes to stretch marks its not a simple clear cut, theres many factors involved but in general keeping the top layer of your skin moist and healthy will mean less moisture loss and thus less likely for your skin to break. Think about the driest place on your body - sole of your feet - if they are constantly dry - it starts cracking - deep into the layers. so no its incorrect to assume that since skin is thick that it wont penetrate deep enough. Plus the epidermis on your boobs is not as thick in comparison to your hands/feet so yes it can be beneficial. Is there a 100% guarantee you wont have stretch marks ? No because other factors come into play - like your initial skin integrity, your genetics, your diet, exposure to irritants/UV rays etc. So every one will react differently but thats usually the case with most things (even to prescription drugs - different people will react differently). Anyway - it doesnt hurt to keep your skin moisturized regardless. Good luck violett
JennaB89
I've had stretch marks on my boobs since I was a teen, I don't think it would matter what lotions I put on it thanks for that one mum! hopefully BA won't exacerbate the stretch marks too much! Jaddles
Yup, the skin on my feet cracks. It starts at the surface, and if I continue to neglect them the cracks get deeper until they bleed and hurt like crazy. As someone who had a HUUUUUGE pregnant belly and had more stretch marks (despite oiling by belly twice a day with Clarins oil) I can tell you that my stretch marks never bled, they didn't hurt. My SKIN wasn't damaged. The epidermis was. Despite the oil I applied to my thin belly skin.
violett
Thanks ladies, its just the one so far, so i'm not getting myself too concerned. Ive been super tentative to moisturise etc but I think I'll start, whether it will help or not I may as well. I think maybe it can help appearance even if not preventing them. I got pretty bad stretch marks on my hips as a teenager but my boobs never grew enough to get any!

Yes a stretch mark is not going to bleed like a crack on your foot might ( on a side note and for clearance not all cracks in the feet will actually bleed unless you go deep into and damage the dermis - as epidermis is NOT vascular and doesn't contain blood vessels) but that doesn't mean your skin is not damaged. you can have excessive thinning of your skin - and although technically your skin would be intact/not bleeding - it is not healthy and it is damaged - in this instant it has lost elasticity and it has lost structural support. Similar but a little bit more complex situation happens with stretch marks when all of the skin layers don't have enough time to adjust to changes/grow. Making sure your skin isn't dry isn't going to cause damage might just help the situation in the right individual. obviously moisturizing isn't a magic wand though just helps a little
