TERRIFIED of NOT waking up!!

So, my BA journey has just begun. And to say it's been a bumpy ride is putting it lightly! Back in early 2008 I was diagnosed with MRSA in my left breast after having my first born. Due to this, I've had to book swabs & a mammogram just to make sure surgery is fine to proceed! I've chosen TCI, still tossing up between Dr Lee & Dr Kwok... Applied for finance - SUCCESS! Yes!

Ive been considering BA seriously since 2009, have research a ton & finally decided this is definitely what I want. BUT - I have an overwhelming fear of not waking up, ever. I know all surgery does have this risk, but it's seriously making me re-consider having new boobies ? Has anyone else had this fear? I've had twilight sedation a couple of times for short procedures. BA is approx 1-2 hours, that's a long time!!!

Yes, I used to be terrified of being put to sleep for that same reason.

I've now had GA many times and am less nervous each time.

I think what helped me was always just talking heaps with the doctor and anaesthetist with my fears. Also I remember being told that there is more risk in something happening to you driving to your surgery, rather than not waking up from it.

Anaesthetists are absolute artists. I work as an anaesthetic nurse. Only ever had 1 patient not wake up. Who was very old and already very sick and we knew the chance was pretty great before she was put under.

You put your lives in the hands of the Anaesthetist not the surgeon. They have so many different drugs and formulas at their disposal and are absolute geniuses.

I wouldn't be worried about it. Just look forward to the most restful sleep you've probably had for years!

Hi! I had my surgery today and I was in the exact same boat as you! I made got so anxious I threw up! However once I got to the centre I felt an unbelievable calm come over me! Your doctor has probably performed thousands before he or she got to you! The likelihood of you having an aesthetic reaction is super low and even if something does happen your anethetist is qualified correctly is trained to deal with situations like that!

However i completely understand why you are anxious about this! Perhaps you can call your surgeon or anethetist and discuss your fears with them! Sometimes they will prescribe you something before hand to help with this!
