Platinum
Hi all, I am less than 2 weeks out from my BA and never asked my PS or was told when to stop drinking alcohol in preparation for surgery. I am guessing I should stop now anyway but am interested in when you were advised to stop drinking before you have your surgery. Thanks, Platinum
Minimel
Good question Platinum I would be interested in this one too! I don't have much happening in the lead up but I have a few events on afterwards I'm hoping I'll be right to drink about 4-5 weeks after... Me too, I have a dinner with friends a few weeks after and am hoping it's fine. Also I have one more event 1 week prior, not sure if a drink or 2 is OK or I really shouldn't. It doesn't really bother me not to drink but would be good to know if it's not OK. My only surgery experience so far has been 2 c-sections so obviously I was not having any alcohol anytime before or soon after

Pixievibes
I was just thinking about this before. I have a concert 3 days after my scheduled surgery! Is this a good idea?!

What concert are you going to Pixievibes and do you have seats or is it the moshpit? You might not be feeling up to it 3 days after, especially if it is the moshpit! SmallJoy
2 weeks, just a matter of the blood thinning and the surgeons are unable to operate on you If you have a blood alcohol content. So no booZing the night before surgery ladies! I know I'll be so nervous the wine will be inviting but better safe than sorry
SmallJoy
I was just thinking about this before. I have a concert 3 days after my scheduled surgery! Is this a good idea?! It's my bf's younger brothers 21st birthday 3 days after my surgery, we've told them we probably won't be there as I assume I won't be up to it? Is this safe to assume? Obviously I wouldn't drink or stay out late, would it be possible at all? Or will I just be a stiff sore robot haha? I am thinking at 3 days post op I might be able to go out to the shops but probably still feel a bit crap! You might be able to show up SmallJoy but you probably won't want to stay long and def keep away from lots of people bumping into you! I really want to go see the X Fighters motox a few weeks after and hoping I can and tix are still available! Hubby thinks I shouldn't be going to something so soon

No moshing.. but definitely some grooving. I'd like to be able to have a drink or two.

Hehehe Hanson I remember them growing up but I was more of a metal/punk fan so they were sooo soft in my mind, i can't believe they are still playing I think you will be fine and to have a drink or 2! I am sooo keen on going to soundwave early next year, hubby still not sure I should go but it will be 5 months after surgery so should be fine! I can't wait for bands like Metallica and Slayer to play, soooo awesome!

happy coconut
Great question platinum:) I haven't asked my doc but I'm staying in resorts with pool bars etc so it's going to be hard to resist! I was thinking if I stopped 3 days before I would be okay? I wouldn't be drinking much but just having one or two a night... Oh and I'm going to soundwave next year!! I can't wait..i didn't even think about my boobs..but we don't go anywhere near the mosh pit;)
welfie
I had my BA a week ago. My guidelines was 48hrs prior and one week after (enjoying a red right now). My anaethetist was very thorough and I told him I was a regular drinker (a bottle wine 3 to 4 nights a week) and he was fine with it. Just be truthful and go with your surgeons advice. I was right at the front of the mosh and there was a big crowd surge and my belly piercing which was a bar type got stuck in the holes in the barricade metal fence. All good until there was a pull back and it was stuck in while I came backwards! Ouch is all I can say! Had a big bruise for a couple of weeks, never again! chacha
When i had my TT, PS was happy enough if I didn't drink the few days before the op, but he also knew I was only a light drinker (2 or 3 glasses of wine a week). I have actually stopped now in prep for my BA. After my TT op, think I waited a week before I had any alcohol HTH chacha

Other than c-sections where I obviously had not been drinking for 9 months, it is the only surgery I have had, so I'm not sure. The earlier the better probably but I guess I couple of drinks is OK approaching surgery
mousey77
Your kidneys and liver are put under extreem stress as a result of general Anestethic. You really really should think about that. It takes your body weeks to clear the toxins of a general anesthetic, you should abstain from drinking as long as you can after surgery, not only to allow your body to deal with the general, but also drinking slows healing. I didn't drink for 2 weeks before and 2 months after surgery. I had a tummy tuck as well so I knew I was still healing inside and didn't want to risk slowing that process. Doctors usually reccomend no alcohol for 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after surgery as a minimum.

I have never had a general only spinal blocks and did not drink for 6 months after anyway as I was breast feeding. I did not think about the body needing to flush all the toxins out and that taking a long time. I am really worried about having a general so will do whatever is best for my body to help it out during that time
mousey77
Good Platinum! The longer you can go without the better. Also in addition to the general you will have things such as Morphine or Pethadine given to you during your recovery, and then your antibiotics and take home painkillers.. These things all have to be cleared by the body in addition to the general. I just would not risk it at all. Having a drink simply is not worth it at all for all the extra strain it puts on your body. I'm not just some person spouting 'what I think' either, I'm a scientist and medically trained. I've also had 5 general Anestethics in my life so I know how they tax your body! Good Luck with everything
Platinum
Thanks mousey77, yes all those meds on top of a general sound pretty horrible. I am hoping to take as few meds as possible besides the needed antibiotics, mainly panadol only, but will probably need some endone the first day or 2. I have had bad reactions to meds in the past so I don't like taking anything strong. Do you think their is any advantage in taking probiotics during this time? Something like inner health plus, yakult etc?
