BellaM
Hi ladies I am getting a crease incision and with only a few weeks till the big day I am preparing my recovery pack! I have been told about the scar FX patches that you can wear but the lady at the chemist said with a crease incision I may have trouble getting them to stick and that micropore tape and regular application of bio oil /rose hip oil / bactroban or what ever advised would be fine as long as applied frequently. Also how long after surgery does it take for scars to be free of scab and healed enough to start the oil application and how often is enough to massage and apply? Also did anyone use any creams or oils prior to surgery to prepare the skin for implant? Thanks ladies for your experiences
sandy77
My doc reckoned start the bio oil after first week, so Im needing to go get some, but I think i heard Rosehip is better??
Lozz68
I am preop and have been alternating between applying bio oil and just palmers cocoa butter. im not sure if it will make any difference but i want to take all the precautions i can to reduce stretchmarks. I plan to start using bio oil or something similar on areas for stretchmarks as soon as im allowed afterwards and then start using rosehip oil on the scars once they have healed enough! hopeing to do this once or twice a day I also wouldnt mind trying some of the silicone strips! Platinum
I have heard that you shouldn't use any products on your fresh scar for a while. I think at least a few weeks, but everyone seems to be told different things. I have also heard many people talking about rose hip oil being good but have not used it myself. I have used bio oil on my c-section scars probably from 2 months after surgery and it looks pretty good.
Lozz68
I think as long as you go by your surgeons recommendations you should be alright! I have spoken to my mum about scars and she swore upon rosehip oil as it completely removed the scar she got from having something removed from her nose .... ive never tried it before but i think now might be a great time! Platinum
I am definately going to give the rose hip oil a try too Lozz, so many people seem to think it works wonders so might as well!

As I've had 4 kids I'm over stretch marks but whilst I was pregnant, I was always told use the bio oil before you get big on tummy/breasts as it helps with skin stretching more easily, save on the marks, as you girls are pretty young I would start now, but not let it touch the scar area after op... sandy77
In my days of being an Aromatherapist, We would always have recommended pure Vit E oil for scarring, (capsule form or liquid , you can squeeze out the oil, and add to the blend (usually Frankincense/Lavender essential oils - all for scarring). Rosehip was not one commonly used but I was doing this line of work 10yrs ago, I would def google Vit E versus Rosehip, I would prob not have gone for Bio oil as it contains petrochemical mineral oil (as in baby oil) . Yes it has essential oils and a few botanic oils but when you add theses to a mineral oil it does not penetrate the skin so easily, (due to the molecule size of the mineral oil) thus resulting in non transfer of the plant extracts into the skin, that is why mineral oil is so greasy it doesn't sink in and therapist would never use it in massage with aromatherapy oils. Very technical, but thats what i was taught, so I never buy any massage products containing Paraffinum Liquidum (label name for mineral oils) as in renders the plant extracts void. therefore stick with the most natural base oils - rose hip, calendula, almond , sunflower as your base etc etc
sandy77
Oil for Scarred or Dry Skin Recipe: This fragrant oil blend is an all-purpose facial and body oil that helps to restore the skin. It is wonderful for skin damaged by acne, scars and sun and is beneficial to mature, dry skin, as well. 2 tbsp. hazelnut oil 2 tbsp. unrefined, organic rose-hip-seed oil 1 tsp. vitamin-E oil 5 drops calendula oil 5 drops carrot-seed essential oil 5 drops lavender essential oil 5 drops rosemary essential oil Heres a typical recipe, tho personally I would not bother with carrot-seed/calendula oil as hard to find in shops(I would use Frankinscence all day long instead) for the vit e oil I would squeeze out enough capsules to get the quantity. I can guarantee, it would work 100 times better that bio oil
Lozz68
Hey sandy i have considered pure Vit E oil and have googled it a bit ... sounds good but you have to make sure you get the correct type - it has some technical name
sandy77
Hey sandy i have considered pure Vit E oil and have googled it a bit ... sounds good but you have to make sure you get the correct type - it has some technical name Tocopherol is the proper name, but we were always told you just buy the capsules and pin prick, then squeeze out oil, unless your a therapist and use gallons of the stuff and buy it in bulk, its something you would add to the final massage oil blend, as it also keeps the oils from going rancid, loads of info online as to how to use it, yes you can buy products containing this i.e. like Bio oil, but you can bet its in minute quantities, and useless due to them adding mineral oil. any aromatherapist will be able to make you up a bottle of proper stuff if you didn't want to do it yourself. but its very easy. sandy77
http://www.oskiaskincare.com/ABOUT-OSKIA/OUR-KEY-INGREDIENTS/VITAMIN-E/ - heres a good link explaining its benefits better. http://www.aromaweb.com/articles/whatcarr.asp - another good site explaining all these oils therapeutic properties, so you can decide which is best for certain treatments It really is a basic oil, you don't need to pay obscene money for branded Vit e - the most purest form is in the capsules I reckon
janeybaby
I was told no scar treatment til 6wks... Up until that time I was told to keep the scars covered with micropore tape. I think this did a great job at keeping my scars flat and stopping them from spreading out.. It also felt better having them covered as they felt protected I've only used the odd bit of bio oil since but I really just think they'll fade in time and it's not even necessary. If your surgeon does a neat job they'll just be thin lines and they'll fade as time goes by til you can't see them anymore
freidabc
My surgeon also said not to use any oils/ creams etc to begin with. I'm 4 weeks post op and my incisions are pretty neat and faded already (i have pics if you want to send me a FR). The recommendation was: surgical tape at all times covered with a waterproof dressing the first week (the dressing was removed at my 1 week post op appointment) surgical tape only at all times the second week (I didn't touch it except to pat dry after a shower) silicone tape from week 3 (at all times except remove to have a shower). They gave me a box of 'siltape' 2cm x 3m and I just rip of a small amount as needed (I am allowed to re-use the same bits up to 4 times each). Not sure how long I use this for...maybe till the box runs out (will probably last for months)? I'm also not sure when I can start using anything else on the scars...I assume once I stop using the silicone tape as it won't stick to an oily surface. I will probably use Sukin organic Rosehip oil as I already have some.
SelaV
My PS recommended Environ AVST oil to put on the crease for two weeks prior to operation to repare the skin, I ended up doing for months as my first date got postponed. He also said to start it again at my six day check up, on top of the tape and massage the scar gently every day.. It is expensive though. Environ was started by a South African cosmetic surgeon for his patients after surgery, and AVST is VitA oil with some Vit C and Vit E oil. SelaV
Also when the tape got sticky to change it and use eucalyptus oil to get rid of any sticky gum on my skin left from the tape..The tape I was given is porous, so the oil goes through. Kitteh
I'm not a fan of bio oil. Used it for a while when I was pregnant and found the smell made me feel sick. That could have been a sensitive pregnant lady thing lol but I found the bottle in my cupboard when I was moving home last year and the smell still made me feel icky. SelaV
i got it from my surgeon but it is also available online.. google environ, you might find a site, I use "Touchofskincare.co.nz ", not sure where they are based but they sell environ online at a better price with free postage over a certain price, than I have found at home in NZ. Platinum
Thanks for all that info on essential oils sandy77! I did always find the bio oil annoying how it did not sink into the skin. Not so bad for just my c- section scar, but I used it all over my tummy during pregnancy to try not get stretch marks and it was very messy to use!
