Telling your gp about surgery in Thailand

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering how you all went telling your gp you were getting surgery done in Thailand?

I know it's best to go see a gp before you go and let them know what's going on however I know a lot of people in the Australian medical industry aren't so supportive of us who venture over seas for surgery.. I don't know my gp very well I moved house about 2 years ago and have only seen her about 3 times :/

But any advice would be great! Or anyone in the Melbourne area that has a good gp supportive of this?

Thanks!

mmmmm sorry not much help as I never told my GP........I was in a similar position and have only seen my GP a few times ever, but she is from O/S so I'm hoping if I ever have to bring up the topic with her she'll be ok with it.

I actually just told my GP 2 days ago and I think she was a bit funny about it, didn't say much at first but then said 'you are going to someone reputable over there aren't you?' I wasn't going to say anything but then thought its best to be honest as she will probably eventually find out and I needed to get a letter from her to take with me as well.

I told my GP that I was going to Thailand because i asked him what he thought of surgeons in thailand as i am going for a boob job........ He said that they were good and very clean....he also said that there are alot of great surgeons overseas ... At that time I also found out that our GP is a heart surgeon and practiced in Auckland 5 or so years ago....

I would highly recommend telling your GP before you go, in the unlikely event you might have complications, I had a few and was so blessed to have great contact with my PS via email and a wonderful GP who fit me in straight away.

My GP was very supportive when I told him (in Brisbane). He spoke highly of Thai hospitals - and said I would be in good hands. GP will be surprised when I see him next though as it's been a while since I've seen him.

I told my specialist/medical doctor the other day as I wanted some harder drugs to take with me. He goes to a lot of overseas conferences and when I told him I am booked in to Bumrungrad, he said it is an amazing hospital with great facilities and equipment. He also said Bangkok hospital is fantastic too.

I couldn't agree more, I have spent my whole life changing doctors, none of them ever know what they are talking about.

I've also heard from many people cases of doctors giving their patients the wrong diagnosis which could have lead to huge health problems. Totally different story in Thailand.
