Need help please- can a consultation really show a how dodgy a surgeon is?

Recommended Posts

I have decided to do primary rhino and so far I have seen Dr Pincock of Sydney and Dr Mark Doyle of the Goldcoast. I wanted to see Dr Nettle but his next consultation wasn't till July so I wasn't going to wait.

Pincock was more thorough in assesing my nose. He took my photo in his office and stuck his fingers up my nose to see how much cartilage I had by which I had poor cartilage amount. He also used a wired torch light to look down my nostrills. He also touched and felt my nose.

The only problem was his before an after and before photos of patients with noses similar to me (ethic nose) were disappointing and the price I was quoted was $5000 more than what I was quoted from Doyle. Even the consultation and was almost $100 more than Doyle. I wanted to show my before and after pics which I morphed using an online tool but he didn't seem to take notice. He didn't seem that confident on performing rhino on my nose but I guess he was more realistic of getting the result I wanted as he stated certain things done to my nose were not possible. He also told me I need a second consultation.

Dr Mark Doyle was less tactile and seemed rushed. In fact he didnt even touch my nose. He just looked at my nose although he seemed more confident about achieving what i wanted to get done on my nose but I get the impression he was saying what I wanted to hear probably because I told him how Pincock stated how certain things to my nose were not possible.

My photos were taken by a lady in a seperate `photo shoot` room then it was uploaded to Doyle on his computer to be morphed. I told him about what I wanted and I stated my previous consultation with Pincock about the limitations or problems trying to achieve what I wanted to get done with my nose. I was then taken to a nurse ( who looked more like a model) and she briefed or consulted me on what can be expected or the process of before, during and after rhinoplasty using a powerpoint presentation on her computer. She then went straight to a booking date for the surgery, I was like arent you going to ask me for a second consult? and she said patients usually book for after the first consultation. The consultation with the nurse was def. longer than the time spent with Dr Mark Doyle. During the time with the nurse, Doyle had looked up Pincock and his qualifications and toward the end of the consultation with the nurse, Dr Doyle walked into the nurses office and he told me that Pincock was a ` cosmetic surgeon `not a plastic surgeon based on the initials of his qualification (something about the F.R. A.C initials next to his name).

So who should I get rhino from before its too late????

I've booked in for surgery in mid Feb with Doyle but I'm having second thoughts. One surgeon is less confident and the other is rushed and seem to be a bit too optimistic probably because I told my my previous consult experience.

Hello Summer,,

We'll there a bit to consider in your story..........

Here's my take having had my Face, Ears and Eyes done...

I'd one ever submit my body to be cut to a Plastic Surgeon (Fillers / botox..I'm not as bothered)....The skill differences between cosmetic v's Plastic are usually considerable.

I know the feeling of just wanting it done 'now' however If I can urge you to exercise restraint......

You want it done right - that's always first and make $$$ and time a second....

I don't appreciate getting 'nurse' consults and I'd suggest you get another consult or two elsewhere summer. ...

Fnd a P/S who feels 'right' for you.........confidence is essential (go back to Doyle for another chat?)

I dont know Doyles experience however in my owe story I searched out a P/S who was skilled in face work in particular...not much good going to see a P/S who was great at tummies when I want a new face...lol

Be sure before you commit your hard earned $$$ and your face to anyone........

Ask about "re-working" should the results not be to your expectations.....most surgeons don't talk about it but surgery it not an exact science and more often that you think tummies, boobs, ears, faces don't work out just right and if not you want an agreement in advance that rework will be done at not cost (or minimal costs) (My ears were reworked three times!....arrrgghh)

So in summary - if in doubt - don't!

Hey spotty,

Yeah I've booked for a second consult but that is a day before surgery, like a pre op consult

which in my opinion is too soon.

Im going to ask if I can get another consultation just before per op which means I'll have 3 consultations before surgery. I dont care if its goingto cost me. I just hope they have space for it.

Summer have you done any research on Dr Doyle? Have you found anyone on this forum that has had rhino by him? Im currently in the same situation trying to decide on surgeons I think you have to be very careful on who you pick and really do your research on them the last thing you want is to have to go get a revision from someone else!

Hey Brittney,

Yeah i I had done research on Doyle and read a lot of reviews on him on here which seem to be positive. Hey seems to be good at BA.I have found someone who had done rhino with Doyle but they were last logged in 2 years ago so getting a reply is unlikely.

I can't find reviews on him on makemeheal unless im looking in the wrong place. Any links?

Hi Summer

I totally agree with everything that Spotty said above. This is a huge decision which is not only going to cost you a lot of money, but also you are letting someone cut into your body and change a feature that is going to be smack bang in the middle of your face for the rest of your life. After having just gone through a rhinoplasty myself, I can imagine that there would be nothing worse than going through the surgery, the recovery, and ending up with something that you are not happy with. Frankly it would be pretty devastating.

What worries me is it sounds like you still have a lot of doubts about whether you have picked the right surgeon for you. I know you want to have the procedure done as soon as possible, believe me I have been there and I know what it feels like to just want to get it over with so you can move on with your life. However, this is not a decision you want to rush into. Is it possible that you could postpone your booking and spend some more time doing some research and having second consults? Maybe you could make a list of your questions/concerns and see which surgeon is able to address them to your satisfaction? Also are any of the surgeons able or willing to put you in touch with previous patients who have had a similar ethnic nose rhinoplasty? This may help you to make a decision which you feel confident in. You could also try contacting the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons to see if they can offer any advice about specialists in ethnic rhinoplasty.

For me personally, I spent many years thinking about having a rhinoplasty before I finally made the decision to do so. I had my rhinoplasty done with Dr Mark Doyle four weeks ago and although it is only early days in my recovery, I am happy with the result so far. However, before booking in my operation, I felt confident that my expectation of what I wanted was in line with what Dr Doyle said he could achieve and that we were both agreed on what the ideal end result would be. I would not have booked in if this had not been the case. Personally I would have found it too scary to go through surgery with doubts in my mind.

So my advice to you is to wait until you are 100% confident that you've chosen the right surgeon for you, that you understand the results that surgeon can realistically give you and that you are prepared to accept those results.

I hope this advice helps and I wish you all the best. Please feel free to message me if you would like to chat in more detail in private.

its been a while since ive been on this forum as i had my nose done over a year ago now but i had pincock do my rhinoplasty and was very happy, dont be confused by the whole plastic vs cosmetc surgery thing, pincock is an ent surgeon 9hence the fracs (it means college of surgeons) that has done facial plastic training in the USA (not many have this), same as marcells and a few others. one thing about him positve or negaitve is he is not a "seller" and is a straight shooter, I would prefer someone be honest than tell me what i want to hear. i was very happy with consults and results and post surgical stuff. i still get my botox and lips done there and its a very natural result. just my 2 cents but i saw quite a few surgeons pre-op and did my research.

I would wait for the 3rd one. You MUST feel good about your surgeon. If you don't like the before and after, don't do it. That will be YOU in the before and after...and if they don't listen, will he listen and be too rushed when you are in pain or when you think you have an infection, etc. ?You have to know your surgeon has your back,,or in this case your nose. And don't spend $5000 MORE,,,my gosh that is ridiculous for him to have such a high price!!

Don't let yourself get into an uncomfortable situation because he is "Almighty Surgeon" (I am a nurse,,we talk this way,,ha ha) Remember YOU are the customer,,YOU are paying his bills,, and YOU are PAYING for a service. And with the amount of money you are paying, he better sit down and listen to your concerns and do what YOU want. Anything short of that,,you should walk!! Don't let him and his model nurse intimidate you!

I've seen afew for my nose, and gone with friends for boobs or lipo - some just seem too slick, with fancy offices, pretty nurses with boobs bulging, lips pouting

That doesn't mean they are good, or bad

It's hard to get bracve enough, let alone decide on the surgeon

They only show you their good results in their album
