Anyone out there considering or had preventative double mastectomy?

Recommended Posts

Anyone out there considering or had preventative double mastectomy? At just 21 I am faced by this decision due to family history of breast cancer (my family carries one of the genes that increase the chances of breast cancer by a huge percentage)... just wondering if there is anyone else out there that is also facing this decision, or has had to in the past.

Pros to having them off:

- not having to worry so much

- 90% chance of not developing breast cancer

Cons to having them off:

- messy surgery - been told may even lose my nipple :(

- scanning (ultrasounds and mammograms) every 12 months starting immediately (instead of every 2 years starting at aged 40)

- longer recovery period and may be multiple surgeries

- not able to breast feed

I am booked in to see our local breast specialist to help me make a more informed decision, and there may be more pros and cons but this is what i have come up with so far. Would love some thoughts and feedback

So sorry to hear you have the gene. I've had this discussion with my mum before, even though our family doesn't have a history of breast cancer And if I was faced with the decision I would definatly do a double mastectomy. If you have the chance to reduce the risk of getting it, it's definatly worth doing something about. Breast can be reconstructed. You may not have a nipple or be able to breast feed but you will have life, which is the most important thing.

It's a huge decision and I would get a few opinions from different doctors to make an informed one.

Yeah thats what I am thinking - I am spending all this money and time (and PAIN) to get something I want, and maybe should just get everything taken off now. That way I won't have to be so nervous about it all the time. I had a scare with a lump last week, but luckily it is just a cyst. Apparently small chested women are prone to cysts but still, the whole mindset of having a lump knowing i have this bad gene was just a nightmare... I was just hoping someone could shed some more light my way on pros and cons but I have a feeling this is a tough one to ask...

Thanks wants bbs xo
