Be careful who you choose !!!!!! x

Recommended Posts

Hi girls,

I recently read a blog on the website of the advisory centre about the difference between a Plastic Surgeon and a Cosmetic Surgeon. Did you know that there is no real regulation in Australia, scary!!!! Be careful who you choose, make sure they are qualified. This place has actually started a petition to introduce regulation which I have signed. I thought I would share it with you.

Hi Lillie, very interesting. I just thought I would say that my surgeon is a cosmetic surgeon and I am 110% happy with his work, my results, and my aftercare. :) he is also a member of FRACS.

Hi Jess, I am glad to hear that you had a positive experience, I thought that a Surgeon had to complete there minimum 8 years of RACS training before they could become a member of FRACS? I thought cosmetic surgeons were unable to join FRACS? Im confused now. Lillie xxx

Hi Lilli :) you are absolutely correct in saying be careful who you choose! But I don't think it should be narrowed down to cosmetic vs plastic, I think it should be, be careful who you choose in general! My doctor is a cosmetic surgeon and I am over the moon with my results, my experience, the professionalism of the staff and the care I received and still am receiving :) it's all about who you feel comfortable with and your personal choice. Of course yes plastic surgeons are more qualified, but this doesn't mean a cosmetic surgeon (depending who you choose) isn't capable at achieving fantastic results :) I've seen many results on the forum, some by cosmetic, some by plastic and from what I've seen the results are all great

thats right, a plastic surgeon needs to complete the 8 years of surgical training to be a member of FRACS.

That being said, there are many many fantastic and capable cosmetic surgeons in Australia. The key is to do your research and find out as much information and talk to as many patients as you can.

Likewise, just because someone is a 'plastic surgeon' doesnt mean they are going to do a good job either. Thats why it is very important to do some independent research and thats why this place is so wonderful.

Thanks for all of the advice girls, between this amazing forum and Profile Perfection I will be able to find a Surgeon that is best for me. I guess it is just scary to think that there are bad Surgeons out there and that there is no regulation, plastic or cosmetic! I am all for regulation, just so we know we are all safe :) Lillie xxxx

You are so right, there are some very dogdy surgeons out there - both in Australia and overseas - this forum is so great to be able to do some research and speak to REAL girls - not just read a testimonial on a website that could have been faked.

you will find this place fantastic. Not knocking your experience at profile perfection either but i would make sure you research all your surgeons available to you and not just who you are given through an agency as they need to get their money somehow and if they dont charge the customer then it would probably be coming from the surgeons. Only a generalisation, but most surgeons worth their weight in gold wouldnt need to pay kickbacks to get customers as most of the good ones get their patients because their work speaks for itself

I would never use a agency!!!! No way! It is a advisory service, there is a charge for a consultation with them, but well worth it!! They are not connected to any particular Surgeons which is why I went there, that worried me about other places!!! There are so many dodgy places out there who do get money off surgeons! Not good! This place is all about support, quite like here! But here is free which is nice Lillie xxx

ah ok, im a little confused about it all, it says on the website "Independent plastic surgery advice for no additional fee to your surgery." so how much was the fee for the consultation? id much rather pay them my money for help then to not pay money and be helped but only because they get kickbacks like some of the overseas agencies

The consultation was $120, But worth every penny :) I think it means the independent advice and constant support that they give from beginning consultation to recovery is no additional fee to the surgery???!!! That is what my nurse said. They certainly didn't tell me what surgeon I should go with they just gave me loads of advice and helpful tips etc... i went to a place last year that seemed like a advice place but they tried to push me into surgery - i guessed it must be a place your talking about? a agency? sounds like it ;) so what surgeon did you decide on and when are you having your surgery? Are you getting your rhino done at the same time. I considered doing this but i wasnt 100% sure i wanted to get my nose done, my husband was not keen on the idea although ive never liked it. Does it work out much cheaper to get them done at the same time

I still have not 100% decided... My nurse said to really think before deciding... I have been to so many consultations... She just said you will know when you know!!! Why rush!! It's a huge decision that should not be rushed!!! She is right!!! so right!!!! I feel very ready now and so informed about my nose and boobs... I think I'd like to do both together. Cost will depend on the surgeon I choose I guess?!! Lillie xxxxx

yeah i was thinking it would be cheaper because you dont have to pay for the hospital and anaesthetist twice, and one recovery too. Who did you have consults with? only surgeons in sydney?

i havent had my nose done in melbourne only my breast and i can absolutely recommend at least two surgeons if you want your boobs done. My surgeon also does noses but i haven't seen his work in that aspect so cant comment.

What surgeons have you consulted with so far?

I'm fairly certain Cosmetic Surgeons cannot be part of FRACS, they have their own cosmetic surgeon membership group but not FRACS

Yes cosmetic surgeons are not part of FRACS as far as im concerned either. I signed the petition, because although I agree there are many great cosmetic surgeons it still needs to be regulated for the ones that arent so great. I do beieve a lot of new members will benefit from seeing this. thanks!

England has just announced a national public data site on surgeons - a small step towards public access to all surgeons history and surgery outcomes...part of making more informed choices

'Surgeon data: 'Historic' move for NHS' (BBC)

"The first wave of new performance data for individual surgeons in England is being published in what is being hailed as a historic moment for the NHS.

Prof Norman Williams, president of the Royal College of Surgeons, said: "This is an historic moment for surgery, and I'm enormously proud of what surgeons up and down the country have achieved."

As for Plastic Surgeons - this is a good link/read
