Mrs B reacted to BreastsToBe in Silimed implants in hot water
After commenting on this thread last night I emailed Dr Harwood who called me immediately. He addressed all of my concerns and in a nutshell said there is no need for alarm as:
    - the issue is to do with surface particles, all implants are sterilised prior to insertion anyway so the implants are cleansed of any potential contaminants
    - the concerns apply only to implants manufactured post March 2014 (mine were a previous batch)
    - if there were surface contaminants on the implants, there would have been symptoms soon after surgery (infection etc)
    - the investigating body is not even sure at this stage whether the contaminants affect breast implants as the particular factory under investigation also manufactures other Silimed products
    - the implants have not been recalled, it is a temporary suspension while investigations are underway
    - the concerns are not related to the quality of the implants or the materials used, it's purely a surface contamination concern
Furthrt to my conversation with Dr Harwood, I found this article http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2015-09-25/tga-advise-surgeons-risk-from-silimed-implants-extremely-low/6805802 stating that the contaminants were found to be silica and cotton fibres and that any risk to patients is extremely low.

You should be fine - they passed their annual inspection in March 2014, so assuming the current "scare" is going to be for any implants manufactured after this time.

Following this thread! I haven't logged into the forum for an eternity but saw a news story on the Silimed Braz tonight. Very keen to know more about the situation as I got these implants back in 2011. I am now breastfeeding my 6mo son and I am concerned there may be a risk to him

2 nurses walked me through to the recovery room where my hubby was waiting and I had some jelly beans, drank ½ a cup of tea and a glass of water. Dr Harwood came into the recovery room and asked how I was feeling and I said pretty good, and he said the surgery went very well. I layed there a little longer and then started to feel a tad nauseous so the nurse gave me a pill and I felt good pretty quick again. We left the surgery around 4pm when I was ready to go home. The drive home was a bit bumpy (most of the roads out our way are still flood damaged from 12 months ago!), but not too bad, I just hung onto my girls for the drive lol.

We got home and all I wanted to do was lay down and wait for my babies to be brought home by my Mum. Hubby made steamed vegies and salmon for dinner and we sat at the dinner table and ate together. I then had a sleeping tablet, antibiotic and 2 mercyndol, layed on the bed with my pillows all set up and dozed until I heard my Mum arrive. My 2 kiddies came running in all excited, they had made me a whole tray of chocolate cupcakes with iced lettering on them that spelt “Hope it went well Mum, love B and C” (we had decided from the beginning to tell them about my op as we are a very open and honest family and knew I couldn’t keep this from them. They have both been very understanding and supportive throughout it all).

Since my surgery, I have had a 1 week checkup, 4 week check up and an unscheduled appointment yesterday as 1 of my dissolvable stitches had just poked itself through the surface of my right incision (Kim just trimmed it so it went back beneath the surface, cleaned it and put a waterproof dressing over it that I now leave on for 3 days for the little hole the stitch made to seal over ). I have also sent him 3 emails, and rang his personal mobile on the SUNDAY afternoon after my surgery. I have rang and spoken to the girls at the surgery on at least 5 occasions since my surgery for any question I have had. AND every single time, I have not felt more welcome or cared for! They have all been so amazing! I cannot recommend Dr Kim Harwood to anyone enough! I am so so happy with my results I would recommend ANY of my family and friends and strangers to him in a heartbeat.

This is a "longy" but a "goody"!

Yesterday afternoon I had an unscheduled appointment with Dr Harwood, feeling well cared for and so happy. I thought it was about time I write the recommendation he and his wonderful staff absolutely deserve!

A little about me: I am 33 years old, have been with my wonderful husband now for nearly 12 years, have 2 beautiful children (aged 8 and 10), am 175cm tall, 54kgs, aussie dress size 6-8, 69cm ribcage (28 inches), was 84cm bust (34 inches) a 10C/D, 12cm BWD (I think that's what they refer to it as, where the doc has measured the width of my breast to determine the size implant that would fit best). For at least 2 years I contemplated having a BA due to being quite dissatisfied with how my breasts appeared after breastfeeding my 2 gorgeous babies. I was once a lingerie/bikini model (between the ages of 12 and 19 I modelled) and was always complimented on my height and size 10D boobs (from about age 15 they were this size)!

On the 13th of January 2012 I had my BA surgery with Dr Harwood. It took me 2 years of research to finally decide to get my boobies! Only once I discovered Brazilian Silimed polyurethane implants did I decide a BA was for me.

I chose Brazilian implants before even shopping for a surgeon due to the drastically reduced cc risk (which was always my own personal greatest concern). My first point of contact was Dr Poomee, as one of my closest friends had hers done with him about 3 years ago and had nothing but praise for him. I emailed Dr Poomee and expressed my desires for brazilian implants, but he informed me he will not use these implants as they are not yet FDA approved (a whole other story, but there is lots on this forum about why this is so, and I'm not going to go into all that right now ).

I had an appointment with Dr Szalay, his recommendation was round overs 620cc high profile and that without the very large implant I would need a lift. I then had an appointment with Dr Harwood! When booking my appointment on the phone, I found his staff very friendly, cheerful and happy to have a little "chat" with me about my poor saggy boobies lol. When going into my appointment, there was a different lady at the desk, but she was just as friendly and cheerful as the lady I had chatted with on the phone Hubby and I waited about 5 mins and were welcomed by a friendly man with a nice smile... Dr Harwood.

He started my appointment by asking me what it is I am wanting to achieve from the surgery. He then explained about the Brazilian implants and the information that I already knew about them and the decreased risk of CC (capsular contracture) etc. He asked me if I had any questions about the implants or surgery... I then threw a long list of questions at him about risks, responsibility, recovery, surgery etc. He answered all of my questions to my complete satisfaction and beyond! I felt very safe and reassured I would be in very good hands with him. We had a giggle about a couple of my questions (hehe, some of my questions were a little "rude" lol) and I felt very at ease with him, and I could tell my hubby did too!

He then said let's have a look and talk more about size, shape and get an idea of what we are starting with... I took off my top and bra and stood infront of him, and my hubby was just slightly behind Dr Harwood. I didn't feel embarrassed or uncomfortable like this infront of Kim (at my first consultation with Dr Szalay, I was sat down and shaking like a leaf and was actually constantly apologising to Dr Szalay for my bodily reaction! lol I was so nervous with him), I was at ease. Before Dr Harwood touched my breasts at all, he asked me if it was ok (the first time), then any other touching he'd say "ok, well I'm just going to get a little personal, is this ok? He was so respectful and caring. He took and wrote down measurements on a chart.

Dr Harwood then gave me a bra to wear to "try on" some implants... we decided on 2 sizes that looked good on me. He then showed me my expected projection, cleavage, nipple position. We sat down and he advised 365 or 410cc extra high profile teardrop dual plane would work well for me and my desired outcome. I then advised him of my first consultation Dr's opinion, to which he responded in detail why it would not give me a long lasting desired outcome. EVERYTHING he had to say made complete sense. I also told him about the first consultation saying that without an extra large sized implant, I would need a lift. Kim explained I did not need a lift, however I should have a consultation with a Plastic Surgeon to discuss this also to put my mind at ease. Later THAT evening, I received an email from Dr Harwood that went over everything we discussed (which was so good to refresh my memory also!).

My 3rd consultation was with Dr Richardson, a plastic surgeon. He also advised I did not need a lift, or an extra large implant! And said he could give me anything I wanted. I told him of Dr Harwood's recommendation and my outcome expectations, and Dr Richardson agreed it was an accurate recommendation. A couple of things I didn't like about this consultation was that I had my hubby with me for support, and yet Dr Richardson had me behind a curtain (in the same room) when he looked and measured. And, I felt he didn't really care about my desired outcome so much, but instead just wanted to do what I wanted - and yet, I felt that was HIS job to decide what was best to achieve my desired outcome.

My surgery was scheduled for the 20th of January, and I asked for any available cancellations, and got one on the 13th of January (Friday the 13th! lol). I emailed Dr Harwood a couple of times with some stressed-out type questions in the weeks leading up to my surgery, and he ALWAYS responded with interested and caring information Dr Harwood also ordered in both of my recommended sizes, just incase there wasn't quite enough room to fit my 410cc's. I reiterated I really wanted the larger size, and he assured me that if it was possible, he would certainly give me the larger size I wanted. I felt more and more comfortable with my selection of my surgeon!

Christmas and New years flew by and next you know I’m a week out from my surgery. I piled on my workload, speeding up my order timing to keep myself very busy, I even worked the morning of my surgery date! We drove the kiddies over to their grandparents and had a chat before heading in for the 1 and ½ hour drive to Brisbane. We arrived at Dr Harwoods to the lovely lady on the desk, we went through post op information, meds, bra, strap. Luckily my hubby was switched on and listening (and we had the information sheet to take home and all of the meds have instructions on them) because I was so anxious that it’s mostly a blur now.

We then went into the surgery room and tried on the post surgery bra. I took off my top, bra and jeans and got to leave my knickers on, and put on a gown. Not long after, Dr Harwood came in, all ready in his surgery-wear. He took before pics and re-measured me and joked to my hubby “measure twice, cut once” lol He was quite jovial and this helped me to relax more. He then drew on my chest and turned me to see infront of the mirror where he explained where my incisions would be. He showed me again my expected projection, cleavage, nipple position… I felt very confident about this information and actually found myself smiling (much to my surprise cause I was completely sh*tting myself by then!).

I was ushered over to the bed and layed down while the nurses started prepping me with monitors etc, Dr Harwood inserted a cannula in my left arm and instructed my hubby to come be near me. My hubby stood up near my head, side-by-side with Dr Harwood (I cannot tell you how comforting having my hubby there right beside me was). Dr Harwood asked me how I was feeling and I said I was so scared, even my legs were shaking uncontrollably. He then said “well we are going to give you a lovely glass of wine”… within minutes my legs stopped shaking and I felt nice and floaty. Doc asked how I was now and I said “yeah, nice and floaty”. They continued to prep and chat to me, but then I started to feel a little "room-spinny", but not too bad, and I told him and he was like "ok, another glass of wine" hehe. I felt very tired and like I was trying to talk but could only talk softly. My hubby says I was frowning and was trying to fight going to sleep lol. Apparently the last thing I said before I went out was to my hubby “you had better appreciate what I am doing for you” and everybody in the surgery room laughed.

Next thing I know I am waking up and could feel some tugging sensation on my right breast, I asked “I’m awake, am I supposed to be awake now” and the nurse replied that it was ok sweety, we are just about finished and we’ll sit you up and give you a look. I noticed I had like a blue sheet over my face with a hole cut out for my eyes and nose and mouth I think. I remember asking “did I get the bigger ones” and Dr Harwood said “yes, they just fit and they look great!” whoohoo. I must have dozed out again and next I know I am sitting up and looking at these awesome perky boobies. I felt sooo happy and relieved it was finished, I survived and it wasn’t half as bad as I had expected. I must have dosed out while they put the bra and strap and my shirt and jeans back on because I remember none of this lol.
