Dr Mark Magnusson, current president of ASAPS and co-chairman of the Australian and New Zealand task force into breast implant associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lyphomia gives us the facts one ALCL.

“ALCL is not breast cancer, its a lymphoma, so its a cancer of the blood cells”, explains Dr Magnusson. “It usually develops in the fluid around a breast implant…it is rare”.
Whilst our new understanding of this occurrence of this disease can be alarming, Dr Magnusson says “treatment is surgery alone without chemotherapy [and] without radiotherapy. The disease is cured for most of these patients just by remove the implant and the capsule around them”
Patients should be aware of any sudden changes in their breast and consult with their plastic surgeon if they have any concerns.
